Cover letter
A cover letter demonstrates your strong motivation for the specific job/position you are applying for and highlights why you want to present yourself in the best light to the potential employer. It also emphasizes the particular skills, knowledge, and abilities that make you the best choice for the specified job/position. For all the reasons mentioned, it is crucial to highlight what differentiates you from other potential candidates.
A cover letter should be:
- visually consistent with the resume in font and style
- concise – no longer than 1 page
- specific to the particular position
- In the introduction, mention the reason for your application (e.g., "I am applying for the position advertised on…")
- elaborate on your motivation and interest in the specific job/position; use concrete arguments, avoid general statements; be careful with sentences that start with "I"; focus on information that is important to the potential employer; concentrate on your strengths
- at the end, list the documents you are attaching to the cover letter, besides the resume (e.g., letters of recommendation, diplomas, etc.)
- carefully proofread the letter multiple times to ensure it is free of grammatical errors and typos
