Choir and Chamber Choir

The Choir has been active since the founding of the Academy of Music in 1921. Its long-time conductor is Jasenka Ostojić. The Choir gathers students from all departments and study years. Exploring a stylistically diverse and complex repertoire, the Choir and Symphony Orchestra have been conducted by distinguished conductors such as Nikša Bareza, Igor Kuljerić, Zoran Juranić, Vladimir Kranjčević, Uroš Lajovic, Milan Horvat, Igor Gjadrov, Pavle Dešpalj, Aleksandar Kalajdžić, Alun Francis, Mladen Tarbuk, and others. The Symphony Orchestra and Choir of the Academy of Music regularly present interpretatively demanding works to the audience, including Bach's St. John Passion, Brahms's German Requiem, Mendelssohn's oratorios Elijah and St. Paul, Mahler's Symphony No. 2, Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, Mozart's Requiem, Orff's Carmina Burana, Boris Papandopulo's Istrian Frescoes, Arthur Honegger's dramatic oratorio Joan of Arc at the Stake, Mahler's Symphony No. 8, Britten's War Requiem, and others. In addition to the Choir and Symphony Orchestra of the Academy of Music, vocal soloists from the Academy's vocal department have also participated in major opera projects. In collaboration with students and mentors from the Academy of Dramatic Arts, the Academy of Fine Arts, the Faculty of Textile Technology, and the Faculty of Architecture – Design Studies, productions of several operas have been realized. These include operas by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ivan the Terrible by Sergei Prokofiev, Carmen by Georges Bizet, The Nightingale by Igor Stravinsky, the premiere of Boris Papandopulo's Madame Buffault, and Cinderella by Jules Massenet, all directed by leading directors. The centenary of higher education at the Academy of Music was marked with performances of works by Croatian composers Natko Devčić, Stanko Horvat, and Milko Kelemen at the Alumni 100 concert, a memorable staging of Igor Kuljerić's opera-fable Animal Farm, and numerous other projects. From its very beginnings, the special mission of the Academy of Music ensembles has been the preservation and promotion of Croatian musical heritage both at home and abroad.

The Chamber Choir of the Academy of Music of the University of Zagreb was founded in 2010 and brings together students from all departments of the Academy. It was designed as an elective course to nurture a specific choral repertoire, ranging from a cappella programs to vocal-instrumental works performed with prominent ensembles and soloists. The Chamber Choir has held numerous full-length concerts both domestically and internationally and has performed at festivals such as the Zagreb Music Biennale, Passion Heritage (Pasionska baština), and the International Choral Festival Cro Patria. Renowned artists have performed alongside the Chamber Choir, including Catherine Mackintosh, the UMZE Chamber Ensemble (Hungary), the Samobor Strings, the Cappella Odak Academic Choir, the biNg bang Percussion Ensemble, the Jazz Orchestra, and the Early Music Ensemble of the Music Academy of the University of Zagreb. The Choir places special focus on Croatian choral works and has premiered compositions by Josip Magdić, Tomislav Uhlik, Sanja Drakulić, Ivan Josip Skender, Ante Knešaurek, Frano Đurović, Marko Bertić, and Bruno Vlahek. The founder and artistic director of the Chamber Choir is Jasenka Ostojić.
