Jazz Orchestra

In the 2007/2008 academic year, the Academy of Music introduced the elective course Fundamentals of Jazz Improvisation, intended for instrumentalists in the later years of study, as well as for students from theoretical departments. The course successfully sparked students' interest in mastering the fundamental skills needed for playing in jazz orchestras and other types of jazz ensembles, and it soon evolved into the Academy of Music's Jazz Ensemble. After several years, a Jazz Module was established, consisting of four elective courses: Fundamentals of Jazz Improvisation, Rhythm in Jazz, Basics of Arranging for Jazz Ensembles, and the Jazz Ensemble. In the 2016/2017 academic year, the conditions were met to establish the Academy's Jazz Orchestra. The orchestra consists of about twenty members and operates in a standard formation (trumpets, trombones, saxophones, percussion), but it often features a wider variety of instruments uncommon in jazz music, such as violins, classical guitars, flutes, clarinets, and even tamburitzas. It performs works from the classical jazz repertoire, as well as arrangements and original compositions by ensemble members. The orchestra's numerous concerts have captivated audiences and earned widespread acclaim. The founder and conductor of the Jazz Orchestra is Prof. Saša Nestorović.
