Traditional Music Ensemble
The Traditional Music Ensemble of the Academy of Music began its activities in October 2016 with a project titled "Harmony of Dissonance." The project was conceived by Mojca Piškor in collaboration with Joško Ćaleta, the ensemble's leader, and other active participants in traditional music. This project, which later evolved into the ensemble, represented a unique space for meeting and learning specific local musical knowledge exchanged among the students of the Academy of Music and experienced singers from various parts of Croatia. The primary idea of the ensemble is to bridge the gap between two seemingly incompatible worlds – the academic one and the local one, that is, the worlds of artistic and traditional music. The value of the project lies in opening a new experiential space within the Academy, based on the foundations of group learning, music-making, and creation.
Over the years, the ensemble has changed its members, primarily consisting of female students from different departments of the Academy, mostly musicology. Since its establishment, it has participated in numerous projects. Notable among these are the concert at the French Pavilion of the Student Center as part of a joint project of the artistic academies of the University of Zagreb, a joint concert with the Jazz Orchestra of the Academy of Music in the "Saturday at Lisinski" concert series in 2017, and the concert "I Will Sing, I Will Not Stop in Suffering" in 2019, aimed at presenting female singing from the archives of the Institute of Ethnology and Folkloristics. In October and November 2018, Croatian Radio and Television filmed a documentary about the ensemble titled "Harmony of Dissonance" at various locations in Croatia. Additionally, in January 2019, the ensemble recorded its first audio album titled "Harmony of Dissonance – Traces of Croatian Traditional Singing" in collaboration with the Jazz Orchestra of the Music Academy. In addition to its numerous performances, this ensemble has undertaken a large number of field research projects since 2018. Despite being active for only a few years, the ensemble has proven its importance, confirming that the oldest layers of Croatian traditional music, as well as traditional music in general, with their directly shaped repertoire in direct encounters with traditional female and male singers, are highly relevant and inspiring for the youngest generations of students educated in the system of Western European artistic music. Since the academic year 2019/2020, the Traditional Music Ensemble of the Academy of Music has been functioning as the class of the same name, also under the mentorship of Joško Ćaleta.
